AUGUST 16th - Live in the Now...in Harmony

This day in 1987 began the Harmonic Convergence, a campaign launched by Jose Arguelles to unleash peace and prosperity during the final 26 years of 5,125 year Mayan Great Cycle. There were sun dancers. And coordinated prayers. Meditation. And there is nothing inherently wrong with any of this. I love a good Sun Dancer as much as the next Joe. But I’ve always questioned looking to the Mayans for calendar advice. They were an undeniably a great civilization. They gave us many things. Temples. Human Sacrifice. Chocolate. Gold. Crystal Skulls. Skimpy loincloths that actors still use to be “movie naked.” You’re welcome Channing Tatum. And all of that stuff is great (you could talk me into thinking Human Sacrifice is not the most productive way to get things done, but I don’t judge). So yeah, the Mayans were great. But calendars? December 21, 2012 was the end of the Mayan calendar and the 1987 Harmonic Convergence was to “unlock the doors” to these finals years. But notice that I didn’t put down “math” as a particular skill of the Mayans. What’s that? Oh, they were one of the first cultures to understand the concept of zero, you say? Impressive. Not loincloth impressive. But impressive. What? They were highly advanced astronomers and based their calendar on the movements of the moon? Also impressive. Not Alien-Crystal-Skull or Nuked-in-a-Fridge impressive, but still. So maybe the Mayans knew what they were talking about. But maybe, just maybe, they got tired of planning ahead. Know anywhere you can get a calendar for 2312 (If you do, good bet it has kittens on it)? No, because, unless you have a DeLorean and the Flux Capacitor, you don’t have to worry about it. My guess is that Balam Cab told Aknon, “Wow, you went all the way to 2012, huh? Little overkill don’t you think, buddy? I mean I don’t even know who I’m throwing in the sacrifice pit next week, and you’re planning out to December 21, of 2012. Take a break Aknon. Eat some chocolate and get a new loincloth embroidered in gold.” So I’m all for any convergences of the harmonic kind. Anything that can bring the human race closer together is a good thing in my book. But, perhaps we should also quit looking to ancient civilizations for insight into the end of the world, and take a page out of Balam Cab’s book. Live in the now...in harmony.

This Day has been Marked.
